No you don't. Yet, most of what we understand is based on that kind of logic.
What we think we understand is merely the early part of understanding, the belief phase, the hypothesis. We have to continue to go further and farther. Once we recognize a pattern, any pattern, then the next step is to seek to recognize the who what why when how where of the pattern. This then leads to discovering more patterns.
So to put this another way, Recognize the pattern, and recognize the smaller patterns within the pattern and recognize the larger patterns that contain the pattern you first recognized and recognize the pattern of each pattern you encounter.
As you can see, this is endless.
Therefore once the first step is taken and the first pattern is recognized, the natural instincts of genetic potential continues seeking until life is over.
Since most of us believe in an afterlife, then we should know this continues, this seeking of understandings through pattern recognition continues in the afterlife.
Some of us also understand, that if there is an afterlife, there must be a before life. Therefore, before we were born into this life, we had life and that before life was seeking understandings through pattern recognition and that seeking of spirit-soul is continuing through us. We are the afterlife of our before life, and we are the before life of our after life.

Not only that, now you can apply this very basic form of scientific method to anything, and pretty quickly gain at least a little more understanding.
Unfortunate Souls
Unfortunate is the spirit-soul that gets trapped in the time warp of suboptimal warped time. This is when pattern recognition is drastically reduced, and literally most patterns stand still in the mind. Understandings come to a standstill. So then must healthy growth. All of this causes scientific method to be replaced by thought process. What we think. What we think becomes what it's all about.Nope.

Understand enough pattern, understand everything.The only thing to recognize is pattern. If something didn't have a pattern, you could not recognize it. If something didn't have a pattern, you could only encounter it one time. And since that time would be the first time, you wouldn't know what it is. And since you would never encounter it again, you'd never know.
In other words, the only reason you recognize anything is because it has a pattern and it is a pattern.
The only reason you understand something is because of its pattern and through its pattern. This is true even if you are unaware of the concept of pattern.
You recognize letters and numbers by pattern. Pattern of shape, sound, combination.
You walk based on pattern. One foot, the other foot, the other foot.
It takes pattern to create an organism. There are patterns of experience, form, action and more. Multiple patterns are part of every pattern. Pattern can be called by numerous synonyms such as habit, cycle, repetition second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, season, period, Age, Great Year. Any variation of anything is a pattern. Anything that has variations is a pattern. One is the pattern of Many. Egg and Sperm are the pattern for you. Elemental souls of life are the pattern for sperm and egg. History is Pattern. History is a sub-topic of Science.
Science is Pattern. The Pattern of the One Who Knows Most.
Science is the Supreme Being.
The Supreme Being is Pattern.
The Supreme Being is You and Everything Else.
You and Everything Else are pattern. Pattern recognition provides a way of knowing and understanding all of the above.
You can be certain pattern recognition is the universal way of understanding, learning, acquiring knowledge. However we wish to phrase it.From mimicking, vocalizations, gestures, sign-language, totems and every other phase, Nile Valley Mythology is fundamentally about a bunch of patterns given different names told in the form of a story.

Early humans observed processes of self and all else, which is to say, they learned to recognize patterns. Then each of those steps become the pattern and are broken down into smaller steps. Meanwhile at the same time, the pattern we first started with, is also a step in a process of a larger pattern.

When you understand process in general, and then understand more specific processes, you develop a level of awareness that allows you to understand in advance, because you understand the steps that come before or after. You already do this when you hear the pattern of thunder and lightning. You know what comes next.
Everyday all day we are using understanding based on pattern and relying on pattern and the processes of the pattern. Pattern recognition helps us know pretty quickly when something does not fit the pattern of the process. We don't know it by forcing it to exist in our minds. No need to think it through when we can allow it to diffuse through by becoming one with the process.
The reason we can know things pretty quickly is because as soon we collect information from our sensing abilities, that information is compared to other information. When matches are found, they are presented to us as, could be this or this or this. Then we refine those results by seeking additional information. When something doesn't fit a pattern we're aware of, that doesn't mean that something is wrong. It means we need to ask more questions and get more information to help us understand.
We do so by improving our pattern recognition.

Pattern Recognition Is Prediction Is Prophecy
Prediction and prophecy have been discussed, so now I'll rush through it. For example, here is a short list of those who use pattern to achieve the understandings they have and they use pattern when dealing with us: doctors, weather forecasters, diet advice givers,,lawyers, financial advice givers, relationship advice givers, business advice givers, government process explainers, accountants, police, teachers, construction workers, including any type performed on personal residence.All of these, because they have memorized, learned or understand patterns, can repeat that information to use based on the pattern of need you are seeking help with.
We consider these people experts because they can predict what is most likely to work or not work. Throughout this process, they are functioning as prophets. A prophet is a person who can read the signs, the patterns. Same as an oracle reader.
All these people did was study, practice and memorize information, patterns and processes. None of the above require understanding, only a good memory or a well-trained memory, a memory practiced enough so it is able to retain information and retrieve it.
So we end on this note of us learning to recognize the pattern of “experts” who do not understand the patterns they are using. This lack of understanding by us and our experts is self-evident in everyday life and societies.
Pattern recognition acquired and used from the point of view of the suboptimal worldview is never enough, except when the bar is low enough.
