Prison movies definitely get at least one thing right.
In most long-term prisons, there are inmates and groups of inmates who enjoy privileges others do not.
Simply put, this makes them feel special, in control and better able to tolerate otherwise miserable circumstances. All this for the benefit and enjoyment of the warden and employees.

Likewise, the beautiful banking benefit of overdraft protection is one of many privileges afforded to the financially poor among us who have jobs, but not enough income to “make ends meet” or handle any additional expense.
Simply put, just like minimum wage, overdraft protection gives financially poor people a degree of feeling special, important, relaxed and in control, better able to tolerate otherwise miserable financial circumstances. All this for the benefit and enjoyment of governments, their institutions and topmost employees who make and/or enforce decisions.

In addition to having an overdrawn checking account, the account we are mostly overdrawn on is the national account of corrupt logic that keeps us bankrupt, broke and destitute of critical thinking and healthy knowledge of self that would allow us sheep to peep being used as tools and weapons and being led to slaughter, meanwhile our thinking and behavior is their fodder, as we think grazing in the grass is the good life. The protection of fenced in, always available greener pastures gives us a sense of job security in exchange for giving up natural protection (wool), producing baby employees and eventually retiring “Logan's Run,” “Soylent Green,” “1984” and “The Island” fashion (dying for the common worthy cause of a long career and better life). The sheep are happy to be employed, have a job and be working class white sheep, “contributing” to society.

In most places of employment (places where our resources are employed), there are employees and groups of employees (favored collectives) who enjoy privileges others do not. Many pieces of logic are used in every society to put us to sleep and keep us asleep so that our level of awareness remains low and we do not know what's really going on. Thus we learn to tolerate low level living with our heads down on the daily grind. The shit gets deep in the bottom.

Overdraft protection is like loaning us crumbs out of the bottom of a humongous stolen basket filled with fishes, loaves, milk and honey shared unequally among the multitude, that the multitude has gratitude for whatever privileges it can gather after the main privilege harvests are made each season.

In the subtext and in the subconscious, overdraft protection is just another backhanded in-your-face way of reminding us just how “poor” we are and that we are the pitiful have nots who should be grateful to the benevolent smarter haves for extending us the courtesy of credit - $20, $50, $100. Woo wee, ain't we lucky for being able to spend a little bit more than we have.

In an additional subconscious way, overdraft protection is also getting us used to thinking we're not that poor and could make it and live a comfortable life if we just had an additional $100 every now and then.
