An Ephrathite is the family name based on maternal lineage. Only those born of Ephrath/Ephratah are of this lineage. This means only the lineage of Hur downward are Ephrathites/Ephratahites. No one before Hur can be an Ephrathite except his mother unless Ephrath had other children.

The following verses tell us that a city exists.1. Genesis 35:19 (CJB), “So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Efrat (that is, Beit-Lechem).”
Genesis 35:19 (KJV), “And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.' 2. Genesis 48:7 (CJB), ““Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died suddenly, as we were traveling through the land of Kena‘an, while we were still some distance from Efrat; so I buried her there on the way to Efrat (also known as Beit-Lechem).”
Genesis 48:7 (KJV), “And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Bethlehem.” What we also learn is that Ephrath & Bethlemen are one or more of several things.
a. The same place or
b. Ephrath is part of Bethlehem or
c. Bethlehem is part of Ephrath or
d. Sister cities.
e. In any case, the location is in Judah on Mount Ephraim and
