The NDSU bison is based on a male bison and is named Thundar. NDSU uses a person in a costume.
Colorado University at Boulder uses a real buffalo named Ralphie that is female and is described as a bison behind the scenes but called a buffalo in public,

These three represent Aquaria and Kepheus and several other companion star constellations. It is these three that invigorate dry bones and earths, their composite solid form.
